Gomorrah / Gomorra - 2008 - Matteo Garrone
“A bunch of crazed italian man shooting people, wearing nothing but y-fronts.”
Well the film isn’t actually so violent. Perhaps that’s what makes it feel that bit more real.
The film sits somewhere between journalistic re-enactment, and mob drama, and does well at that. It really makes you feel like you’ve experienced a bit of life in the italian slums.
But it never took the time to explain itself. Who are the “two sides” that are at war? What’s the deal with “the chinese”? How do these people get away with what they’re doing?
Perhaps for an Italian audience this is all common knowledge, but without a preamble it left me feeling a bit disastisfied.
