Clean - 2004 - Olivier Assayas
Maggie Cheung teams up with Olivier Assayas again!
I’ve only seen a couple of his films, but what I’ve taken away from them is the true sense of realism, the awkwardness, the unsightly noise of real life.
Kind of like Shane Meadows, but French.
Maggie Cheung plays a Courtney Love type character, a junky, playing second fiddle to her rock star husband, but nevertheless blamed by the public and press for his decline.
And when he dies she has to sort her life out.
It got me, like Maggie Cheung always gets me.
Perhaps its the multi-lingualism (french, english, and mandarin), or perhaps its the fact that she wears a team Zissou hat (maybe even the guest appearance from Tricky).
But it’s great stuff.
